Do Not Go Where the Path May Lead

Each morning I would walk into the classroom and discuss with my students the quote I wrote on the board the evening prior. While I was a military leadership instructor, I taught many classes and made lasting connections with my students. One of my classes created a quote for me on a going away gift. It read:

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

The class told me it was how I made them feel. It left such an impression on me!

Those were some great days.  I live those words. I make enemies sometimes when I stand for what is right. I don’t follow the crowd. I love people and people tend to love me.

Its amazing how many people in life will stand and WATCH wrongful actions OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

I remember a time when I was a young Airman. After turning down an invitation to dinner from a supervisor, my next feedback session didn’t go well. My supervisor told me that I might be successful in the Air Force because I am a Minority woman and he told me the military has quotas to fulfill. Yes, that happened.

Wanna know more? The male in charge of the Inspector General’s office ( a Colonel in the Air Force) didn’t see a problem with the situation above.

As a young Airman I mustered enough nerve to go to the IG office and the Colonel did not see a problem. As a matter of fact, he told me that my supervisor was right. He told me there were quotes to be fulfilled.

Yes! Inappropriate things are happening in EVERY sector of the workplace.

Many people will do and say inappropriate things when he or she believes no one is watching. It is important for leaders to know various forms of bias are happening in your workplace.

Female Defender is my expression of doing good. I am making my life’s work around a topic that may not be popular.

Will you join me?
